I hate and love to say this in response, but "metric system" is a very identifiable phrase in the American language. Not necessarily to our advantage, though: too often, "metric system" is used in anger. But, unlike the concocters of buzz word makers, I don't think we should back down and join the parade of circumlocution. Perhaps one solution is to add to the phrase by saying "metric system of measurement" or "International System of Units."
