I taught only metric units when I taught shop classes at Lindblom Technical High School in Chicago from 1978. None of the students had any problems doing projects in metric units.
I still use much metric in my math classes at Madison Area Technical College in Madison, Wisconsin. But the most interesting was a two week seminar I taught for seventh grade girls in Fort Atkinson Wisconsin in 1982. I taught cooking in only metric units, no ounces or pounds, and even changed the oven temperatures to Celsius. The girls had no trouble cooking in metric only units.
