Many computer languages (and Excel) use the caret "^" to indicate an exponent.  
To me, that is the most clearcut when a superscript is not available.

I don't know about yours, but my mail reader helped me out. That last 
sentence suggests an "m" followed by a caret (^) followed by "2". My 
mail reader automatically reformatted that using superscripts. My point 
was, carets can be used to indicate superscripting the following digit(s).
