I suggest visualizing a high school or college track, many of which surround US football fields. The standard sprint race is 100 m, which most folks have actually seen at one time or other--even on TV if not in person. The finish line is often around the middle of the seating area, and the starting line is somewhere off to the left (track events are run counterclockwise on the track) beyond the end zone of the football field.

A hectare is 100 m on a side, or a 100 m running track sprint distance extended into a square. Easy.
