Our local newspaper published my pro-metric letter so I though you all might want to read it. I provide a link below in addition to the full letter here:

Letter: U.S. must catch up on metric conversion

Hawaii introduced HB 36, a bill that could make SI (the metric system) the official system of measurement in Hawaii and require its use in public documents, public records and public school instructional materials beginning in 2018.

The cost of not switching to SI is quickly increasing with the trend towards globalization. Failing to complete national metric conversion could result in the United States? losing its competitive edge in science and technology, as well as continuing to create bilateral trade impediments with other nations.

Completing our metric conversion would likely result in the creation of many jobs and enable the current and future workforce of the United States to be more prepared to work in the international marketplace.

Just as Oregon pioneered the bottle bill, resulting in other states adopting a similar law and just as the Canadian province of Ontario pioneered legalization of same-sex marriage resulting in a nationwide law, so too Hawaii could very well be the metric pioneer state that would nudge the United States toward completing metric conversion so that our nation can finally enter the modern era of measurement harmony on Earth.
