The Firestone 600 is a 600 km race.
The first sentence of the article appears to be a dig on the metric system:
The race's name may be a little contrived – who uses the metric system when it 
comes to measuring race distances in the U.S.? – but maybe that's apt. 
Why is it when something is metric the American media always has to treat it 
with disdain?  An intelligent reporter would have just mentioned the fact that 
the 600 was kilometres and just left it at that.
