Anna Staver. Thank you for talking with me this morning and for considering this important Oregon story. I hope you were able to reach Representative Denyc Boles by phone for comment concerning the meeting she and I had earlier this morning. Attached is the legislation (LC 44) that you and I discussed moments ago at the Statesman Journal News window. Below you will find some back-and-forth email messages that may be useful to you as a reporter. I think the Statesman Journal would benefit from running this story because it could potentially generate much discussion. The United States Metric Association www.metric.org is a good resource for background on the American effort to complete our national metrication.

Edward, Yes. I am glad I met a pro-SI science teacher during parent-teacher conferences several months ago. Mr Whatley is a great asset in our effort. I also plan to bring along a print-out of a recent NBC News article about Accidental Overdose: Parents are terrible at measuring kids' meds. I imagine it might be difficult to come up with a persuasive argument because many Americans are so stubbornly opposed to getting rid of familiar measures, but perhaps this article might help too. I appreciate your kind words and positive feedback. ----- Message from Edward Schlesinger <[email protected]> --------- Date: Wed, 30 Jul 2014 08:41:26 -0700 From: Edward Schlesinger <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [USMA:54230] LC 44 Meeting; Room H384; 10 am 5 Aug 2014; Oregon State Capitol Building To: David Pearl <[email protected]>David, Glad to know you will have someone representing the education sector with you. See my earlier email where I attached a pdf (Portable Document Format) of a Draft version of LC 44. We will talk about the next steps in moving this legislation forward. Dear David, Dexter Johnson is the lead counsel for the office of Legislative Counsel who are tasked with taking legislative concepts and writing them into legalese. I am forwarding his response to the changes you had suggested. With his explanation, I feel confident that the June 12th draft will be sufficient. I would like to set up a time to talk about the next steps. Let me know your schedule and I will have my assistant Maggie, set something up. Thanks, Denyc Boles -----Original Message----- From: Johnson Dexter Sent: Monday, July 28, 2014 12:25 PM To: Rep Boles Subject: FW: LC 44 Rep. Boles: I reviewed the constituent's suggested changes to LC 44, but actually think the 6-12-14 draft is correct as written. Both the House and the Senate adopt by reference the Form and Style Manual for Legislative Measures (https://www.oregonlegislature.gov/lc/PDFs/form-stylemanual.pdf ) when they adopt House and Senate Rules. The Form and Style Manual does not allow us to reference Proper Names by parenthetical acronym, as your constituent requested. That
is
why you will not find commonly used state agency acronyms (DAS, DOJ, etc.) in the laws of this state. Your constituent also requested removal of the reference to feet and conversion in section 4 of the draft, amending ORS 209.250. The draft already indicates, however, that the text referencing conversion to feet is to be deleted. Bracketing and italicizing of statutory text indicates that the bracketed and italicized text is to be removed from the law, when the bill is enacted. Let me know if you have further questions.
