At yesterday's annual meeting of IEEE SCC14, Elizabeth Gentry (NIST)
provided the following information on the subject of unit pricing. OWM
is the NIST Office of Weights and Measures.
As an aside, my tenure as Chair of SCC14 ended at the adjournment of
that meeting. I've had a very interesting time in that office and
experienced a lot of professional satisfaction from it, thanks to the
many stalwart volunteers I worked alongside. I will remain on the
committee as a worker bee. No new Chair has been appointed yet.

Unit Pricing
In 2012, OWM initiated a working group to seek input on unit pricing
labels on store shelves from consumer, academia, and industry. OWM’s
David Sefcik coordinated a working group that developed and published
NIST SP 1181, Unit Pricing Guide - A Best Practice Approach to Unit
Pricing, as a practical guide for retailers to improve the accuracy and
usability of unit pricing information offered on retail store shelves.
NIST SP 1181 provides guidance on both Metric and U.S. Customary unit
pricing labeling practices. Future plans include field testing the
Metric unit pricing practices in a retail setting within a product
sector where metric labeling has been observed in the marketplace.
