I was interested to note that in today's Reuters news story on "Iran
seizes foreign oil tanker smuggling fuel in Gulf, the following sentence
occured: "It was carrying 700,000 liters of fuel, he said. Seven crewmen
of different nationalities were detained."
There was no effort made to gloss or to translate the liter quantity.
Liters are ordinarily not one of the units that is passed through
unglossed or untranslated, and normally barrels would be used. Maybe
we're making progress. --Martin Morrison
