Hi, everyone, From TV station KSHB in Kansas City, Missouri, we get this gem:
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A sinkhole roughly the size of six to seven washing machines has closed the northbound lanes of State Line Road near 100th Street in Kansas City, Missouri. The article with the washing machine measurement is on their website. <https://www.kshb.com/news/local-news/sinkhole-closes-northbound-lanes-of-state-line-road> The news was also posted on what I think is their Twitter feed, where someone commented: “Americans will measure with anything but the metric system.” A screenshot of the Tweet and the comment about measuring systems was posted on an image-hosting site called Imgur. <https://ihttps//imgur.com/gallery/65qHoIRmgur.com/gallery/65qHoIR> Comments to the post on Imgur mention all sorts of other units used by the media, such as football fields and Olympic swimming pools. Given that the average American isn’t familiar with the metric system anyway, how should have KSHB News described the hole? Best wishes, Peter Goodyear, Melbourne, Australia e-mail: [email protected]
