The banner "This section does not cite any sources ..." probably alludes to the
fact that the links to these sections are weak. The text in both the lede and
in the opening paragraph of the section "Nature of the metric system" could do
with some tidying up.

Firstly, is the metric system a "System of measurement" or a "System of units"?
US legislation uses the phrase "metric system of measurement" but the rest of
the world used "system of units" (as in "International System of Units"). The
most authoritative source on this matter in the international sphere is the
"International vocabulary of metrology – Basic and general concepts and
associated terms (VIM)" (website:
https://nam01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bipm.org%2Futils%2Fcommon%2Fdocuments%2Fjcgm%2FJCGM_200_2012.pdf&data=04%7C01%7Cusma%40lists.colostate.edu%7Ca6c2fe82054141e5532708d8af359cf2%7Cafb58802ff7a4bb1ab21367ff2ecfc8b%7C0%7C0%7C637451992093356662%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=2voLj%2B7UFbmFvHwB3om2GvbrIGUnKy9On3LizCFldOI%3D&reserved=0).
Item 1.13 of this vocabulary gives a formal definition of a "system of units"
and 1.14 of a "coherent system of units" while 3.2 give a formal definition of
"measuring system". It should be noted that in French both "system of
measurement" and a "measuring system" would translate as "système de mesure".
It should be noted in passing that a "measuring system" is a collection of
hardware instruments.

If anyone is looking for references, then I suggest that VIM would be an
appropriate reference. Using VIM would entail a degree of rewriting of the
current text, possibly removing the link to the article "system" and linking
the article "system of measurement" to the text "system of units". Suggested
text is "The metric system is a [[system of measurement|system of units]] that
uses a decimal system of multiples and submultiples where needed. ...", giving
VIM as the reference.

I note that the entry at
https://nam01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fen.wikipedia.org%2FOutline_of_the_metric__system&data=04%7C01%7Cusma%40lists.colostate.edu%7Ca6c2fe82054141e5532708d8af359cf2%7Cafb58802ff7a4bb1ab21367ff2ecfc8b%7C0%7C0%7C637451992093366656%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=%2BnbsFzwb%2Bh%2Br8VqY0uG5k0eoBB6wmYLcxrwc25r6e3I%3D&reserved=0
has a big box under the title “Nature of the metric system” stating “This
section does not cite any sources. Please help improve this section by adding
citations to reliable sources. Unsourced material may be challenged and
removed. (July 2019)”

I did not notice the typical “citation needed” on any references, or any
references, for that matter, except for a single end note referencing both
International Bureau of Weights and Measures and the book _The International
System of Units (SI)_.

If there I s there anyone on this list who provide references, I would be
willing to edit them into the article.
