Most people in the uk don’t use metres for short distances although I admit I haven’t done my own poll 😀
People are used to their Gps guidance systems these days introducing new drivers to yards although in many respects fractions of miles get used. On that point - we now almost have a generation of people who would probably not know how they get to work if they lost Gps connectivity! Similarly who actually knows peoples telephone numbers any more. John- I know you jest but many many moons ago I asked a french colleague and friend if he had to slam his brakes on when it said services 2m. He told me not to be daft Sent from my iPhone On 20 Sep 2021, at 5:14 pm, John Steele <[email protected]> wrote: They should take offense at the misuse of a metric symbol in Imperial. May I suggest the use of "mi" for miles, as used in the US, and mi/h. In the UK, I have always panicked at "Exit 2 m" signs for a moment before I remember the misuse. I have complained in numerous letters with links, telling them the SI has symbols and not abbreviations and what they were saying was thousands per hour. This was not an overnight success, I think I first wrote in 2014, about 7 years ago and probably found a receptive ear from someone who changed the editorial policy or style manual of the newspaper. However, I notice in today's paper, the speed is also given in m/h which I would take as metres per hours. Wink Wink! It’s common in the UK for m to mean miles in many publications, despite the fact most people use metres for short distances. Previously, new TGV models have been marketed based on the speeds that they can reach. However, in the TGV M Alstom sought to create an “innovative and efficient” train with a smaller carbon footprint. The new train — of which SNCF ordered 100 in 2018 at a cost of €2.7billion — will use 20% less energy than the existing model, while maintaining its top speed of 320km/h (199m/h). It will also be able to carry 20% more passengers — 740 as compared to the current maximum of 600 — and be more adaptable, bringing with it the possibility of adjusting the number of carriages, switching first class to second class and reconfiguring the interior of each car. SNCF estimates that the TGV M’s design will bring its maintenance costs down by 30%. In April, Mr Macron’s government pledged €6.5billion to enhance France’s high speed rail offering and encourage train use to reduce emissions. This sum will contribute towards the development of TGV services from Bordeaux-Toulouse, Nice-Marseille and Montpellier-Béziers, with an extension to Perpignan.
