They will add dimes and learn the names and values of both in first grade. - Students will learn the metric system first, starting in fourth grade, because it reinforces the base 10 number system. The usual American measurements - ounces, gallons, miles - will come in 5th grade. In 1975, President Ford signed the Metric Conversion Act (Public Law 94-168) to designate the International System of Units, commonly known as the “metric system,” as the preferred system in the U.S. However, this law did not mandate the use of the metric system, so the United States is currently one of only three countries that has not adopted the metric system as its official system of weights and measures. To date, legislation has not been introduced in the Senate to designate the metric system as our country’s official system.
