Hi all,

I listened to his comments and the one "fact" that he explained was wrong.
The metric system was not implemented in 1789. Work on a replacement for the
existing chaos that masqueraded as a system of units was authorised by the
National Assembly in 1791 and the provisional metric system was accepted in
1795. Once the Dunkirk-Barcelona survey was completed, the definitive
version of the metric system was implemented in 1799.

MY RANT. Over the years I have been deeply involved with the astronomical
community and am quite familiar with Tyson's nonsense. He tried to replace
the eminent Carl Sagan with an "updated" version of Sagan's epic
1980 PBS series "Cosmos: A Personal Voyage." I even had some
correspondence about the series with Sagan, complimenting him on his lively
historical focus.

In contrast to Sagan's erudite, but approachable, series, Tyson's version
was little more than a joke, even though he was a student of Sagan's. At
the time I wrote a review seriously panning Tyson's "updated" version.

Sagan was an educator, whose dedication to public education poured from
every pore of his body. I don't know what his position on metric was, but I
would bet that he would have wanted to educate both children and adults on
the scientific metric system. Tyson rarely teaches. As on this occasion,
he threw away an opportunity to educate the public about the advantages of
the metric system.

Tyson could have talked about the desire of U.S. founders at the time of the
French and American Revolutions, particularly Jefferson, to convert to the
metric system and could have told that interesting history. But, no, Tyson
seems to make a joke of the metric system. I wonder whether he even knows
the history of the metric system in this country. I'll bet Sagan did!
