Well, it looks like one of the examples failed to build, and that may
have something to do with the issue. I pushed a fix, you should retry.

As far was the assertion, it looks like a debug assertion in STL, but
according to the log you build with release mode set. So, I'm not sure
where thats coming from.

Is it possible plug a USRP1 into the USB on one machine and then send
the data across the net to another machine?

This would be useful because the USRP could be near the antennas and
the user interface could be anywhere on the net.

Right now, I use X11 to beam the UI over the net, but then I don't get
the ALSA audio.

It could also be useful if the the USB machine was low performance and
the UI machine was high performance. The USB machine could even be a
embedded machine (runner OpenWRT?), such as a NSLU2 or TL-MR3020.

Thanks,
Ken

I haven't used it but BorIP might do what you want:

Apologies -- BorIP (from the same author) was indeed the program I was
thinking of. ExtIO is designed to get USRP samples into other programs.

Having followed some of the interesting thread discussed in this group, I was
wondering if preference exists for one operating system over another. In
particular, for those that are not using proprietary software packages such as
MATLAB of LabVIEW but instead are building their own executables from
dependencies so that they can make use of GNU-Radio for example, is Linux
preferred to Windows? And if so, which version of Linux is favoured?
Thanks for sharing your experience,
Stan

Subject: [USRP-users] Announcing e1xx-003 Filesystem Release for USRP
        E1xx Devices
Message-ID:
        <caoevzkjcfbpyygxphuroodhduz2zmkchcjw4yhhzbqbnigx...@mail.gmail.com>
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

Greetings fellow engineers, hackers, and radio enthusiasts!

We have released the next version of the root filesystem for E1xx devices!
This release contains a number of exciting improvements, and reflects a
*significant* change in the way that software packages are maintained and
updated on your E1xx device. Ideally, this will also be the last
filesystem release we make, as this new system will keep your device
up-to-date without needing to make new filesystems.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
Software Management, Now 1000%* Easier and More Stable!
-------------------------------------------------------------------
We have transitioned to using the native Angstrom package manager, 'opkg',
for software management. Instead of installing UHD and GNU Radio from
source, for example, these are installed and updated through 'opkg'; this
is very similar to how you update systems with 'apt' or 'yum'. Ettus
Research now hosts it's own package feed, which the e1xx-003 defaults to
looking to for software updates. Each package installed on the filesystem
is available in the feed, and anytime we push updates, you can update your
E1xx simply by doing:

# opkg update
# opkg upgrade

We will push maintenance updates to UHD and GNU Radio when they are
available, and update other system packages if they fix important bugs or
add useful new features. This new process should make software management
much easier and much more stable. As usual, packages are built to optimize
their performance on the ARM architecture, and packages that can benefit
from NEON are built with NEON support (including GNU Radio, of course).

In addition, the kernel will be updated through this method! You will no
longer need to manually update the kernel by mounting the SD card and
copying the image and kernel modules onto your filesystem! It is all
automated through opkg, now.

We anticipate this being the *final* filesystem release for the E1xx
devices. From now on, to get the 'new' filesystem, users will simply
upgrade their device using the 'opkg' package manager. This will make it
much easier for users to update & maintain their systems.

For a quick review of opkg, see here:
http://gumstix.org/add-software-packages.html

As always, if you would rather manage your own software versions, you are
of course welcome to uninstall the provided package, and install a software
distribution from source.

** Okay, so we made up the number '1000%', but seriously, it's awesome.*

-------------------------------------------------------------------
The Kernel: Built Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger
-------------------------------------------------------------------
The kernel included in this release includes a number of improvements:

 * MMC Controller timeout maxed

* This helps users who were having issues with SD Cards.

 * Support for ext4 root file systems

* N.B. By default, the cards use ext3. This change is for our customers
that wanted to try ext4 on their own.

 * Parameter to peek / poke ioctl is range-checked to prevent accidental
kernel crashing by user code.
 * Enabled user-space access to the processor's cycle counter!

* An example of how to do this will be posted on the Wiki soon =)

-------------------------------------------------------------------
Your Pals, UHD & GNU Radio
-------------------------------------------------------------------
The image includes the new UHD 3.4.0 release, and is tracking
the maintenance branch. In case you haven't seen the new features in this
release, here is a short list:

* Higher sample rates / sc8 wire format
* Self-calibration utilities for SBX / WBX
* TX / RX stream API is now official

The image currently has GNU Radio 3.5.2+ (87c8751c99cfb2), which includes a
number of bug fixes, and a lot of improvements in Volk, which can
dramatically improve the speed of your flowgraphs on the E1xx device
family! And, as usual, GNU Radio has been built with Qt support, and GRC
will work out-of-the-box.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
Mini FAQ
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Q: "My E1xx already rocks. Should I update?"
A: Most likely, yes, you should consider updating. If you have already
developed applications for your E1xx that are relatively static, then you
probably don't need to worry about it. If, however, you are using your
E1xx as an ongoing development device, then you should seriously consider
updating. The migration to using a package manager to keep software
up-to-date is a significant improvement, and will make maintaining your
E1xx much easier. It enables you to get the latest and greatest E1xx
kernels, simply by running an update command! How cool is that?

-------------------------------------------------------------------
The Good Stuff
-------------------------------------------------------------------
As usual, you can get the build tarball for this release from our file
server:
http://files.ettus.com/e1xx_images/current/

And you can find instructions on how to create an SD card with the new
filesystem on the Wiki:
http://code.ettus.com/redmine/ettus/projects/usrpe1xx/wiki/FAQ#How-do-I-create-re-create-E1xx-SD-Card-Images

-------------------------------------------------------------------
Conclusion
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Please let us know if you have any questions!

Enjoy, have fun, and as usual, try not to cause too much trouble ;)

Happy Hacking,
The Ettus Team

Stan -

I think the majority of our users prefer Linux - Ubuntu is probably the
most common distribution, followed by Fedora.

UHD, and GNU Radio, both support other OSes (e.g., Windows, OS X), but the
number of people using them seems significantly less.

Cheers,
Ben

Message-ID: <[email protected]>

Hello all,

I successfully ran uhd_cal_rx_iq_balance.exe (input disconnected) and I am
still seeing a DC component in the noise floor (as attached ~-70 dB).

Is this normal? , does anyone have before/after rx calibration noise floor
plots?

Setup:

Windows xp

N200 rev 4.0

WBX rev 5.0

Using UHD 3_4_0 Release (uhd.dll and calibration utilities)

Thanks,

The RX IQ balance utility will not effect DC level on input. However,
there is an automatic DC offset correction in the FPGA. So, I suspect
what you are seeing in the plot is not DC from the RX RF frontend, but
rather leakage from another source.

Unless of course, the application is disabling DC offset correction:
http://files.ettus.com/uhd_docs/doxygen/html/classuhd_1_1usrp_1_1multi__usrp.html#a7beb49c1a04a81b3e7569db482453746

Also, do you also happen to be transmitting? If so, that tone may be the
LO from the transmitter.

I can also suggest:

* Tuning with an LO offset to pull that tone out of band, either on TX
or RX side:
http://files.ettus.com/uhd_docs/manual/html/general.html#tuning-notes

* If you are also transmitting, the TX DC offset correction utility can
also help here.
