I did try the following yesterday but didn't work and after that I sent the
email with the question:
usrp = uhd.usrp.MultiUSRP(args.args)
....
usrp.set_clock_source("external")
I did not try adding the command: usrp.set_time_source("external")
Are they needed to be issued together?

You can call the api calls just as you would in C++ from the usrp object.
For example:
usrp = uhd.usrp.MultiUSRP(args.args)
....
usrp.set_clock_source("external")
usrp.set_time_source("external")
