Hi Marcus,
Thank you for the explanation. I really appreciate it.
I did not look at it that way.
A more-general observation here is that software (and hardware!) systems
that don't already have functionality <X> require various
amounts of work (and corresponding expertise) to implement <X>.
Unless OAI *already has* what you want, it's a "matter of programming"
to achieve the things you need to achieve. Software isn't
magic--if you want to extend it or modify it, it is not unlike most
other engineering-heavy technologies.
I'll use an example from an entirely-different discipline. You have a
car, and you want to modify it to be an amphibious assault
vehicle. Without a considerable background and skill in various
disciplines including mechanical engineering, it's going to be
a steep climb to arrive at your destination.
The experience gleaned from doing "simple" things like changing the oil
or tires will not necessarily be of much help in achieving
your end goal. The same thing happens with software. Deploying
pre-built/pre-configured systems is only minimally useful
when you want to modify the fundamentals of how the software works.
It is at that point that you have to get yours hands
greasy...
