What about other metrics? For example, is there a way to know through the API if the X310 is under heavy network or processing load?

Any query you might want to make to it requires a "session" being established, and since there can be only one of those, you'd be the entity responsible for creating any such
  heavy network or processing load.

The X310 doesn't have a general-purpose CPU and OS on it.  It has a minimal ZPU (or perhaps something newer, I can't recall) implementation in the FPGA to handle a few   housekeeping tasks and implement a de-minimus IP/UDP stack.  It is a pre-MPMD device, so there's no Linux instance sitting there that could do extensive and
  sophisticated performance monitoring.
