Yes, I've heard of the Minors and Marinas..  Apparently it's rather spectacular when it happens.. :-)

Correct - the Trab has these F***** bakerlite bushes and steel pins.  An excellent design, but you need to have the bushes reamed in situ to fit the pins. You can't hone them, like my mate with a Singer Chamois suggested, not thinking that they weren't brass like his - I just wore out his honing stones (and my patience)!!  A good design  I think, but when they DO wear (which you can't do by HONING them, but simply turning them with the steering whell DOES somehow magically achieve it!!) it's a bit or a proc and cost to replace.  They have grease nipples on each of the four, to be lubricated with the front end JACKED UP - which is also in the manual, although there are many Germans who still don't seem to KNOW about any of this........!!! ;-)

The only way to have Trab ones dismantle themselves while driving, is to under-shim the pins such that the (lower esp) nut is clamping on the bush not the pin.  Folks, DON'T DO THIS!!!  Trust me...  It may seem like a good MOT bodge at teh time if you have play and can't get the new ones reamed in time, but - just plain NO!!! :-D

The trunnions on a Marina were actually threaded joints with what would otherwise be thought of as the king pin having a male thread, and the trunnion a female thread. so as you turned the steering the whole lot was going up or down the thread a little. The Marina was derived from the good old Morris Minor which used similar front suspension. Also, the Triumph Herald, Vittesse, Spitfire, GT6 used a similar trunnion arrangement, BUT one needed to be lubricated with grease, and the other with oil. Minors, Marinas (+ Itals) and Triumphs used to be often seen at the side of the road with a collapsed front wheel after a trunnion had parted company with the main kingpin/hub assembly. Some collapses were caused by no lubricant, and others by the use of the wrong lubricant !

If I remember rightly a Trab has plain bushes and is nothing like the threaded trunnions on a Marina.

So, if I can confirm - a KP goes through bushes top and bottom of hub, a trunion is an *independent* top or bottom swivel (like on the Trabant) - correct?  Just curious to get that one right.  I've heard "sort of semi kingpins" and all sorts, trunion sounds more correct.. ?

Thanks!

The marina never had kingpins, did you mean Bottom trunnions? they were a bugger for wearing especially if they weren't greased once a month. Top balljoints suffered from rattling if they weren't greased regularly.

Funnily enough, I have a bit of a soft spot for the marina. My dad had
one, and apart from having to regard the kingpins as a more or less
service item, it was reliable and comfortable. The difference was,
neither it nor the P6 were built by people who went on strike every
time their bosses asked them not to leave old sandwich wrappers in the
sills. I also have a lot of time for the A and B series engines which
were excellent units. But Maestros, Metros, Allegros, 800s and other BL
crocks, no thanks.
