Hi Michael,

Bobs engine looks to be a late 992cc 311 unit (1962 to 1964), with small radiator, thermostat, and water pump. The carb is off a much later car.

Your car should have a 900cc engine with a much wider radiator, no thermostat, and no water pump.

The 900cc and 992cc cars are very different, and have surprisingly few parts in common, but on first glance they look the same as they share the same basic bodyshell. But most parts from the 992 cars will fit the earlier cars, and this often happened. In fact there were special factories that did total rebuilds of cars and ugraded them to the later specification (proper car recycling !!) so many cars were fitted with later parts.

For some unknown reason Wartburg managed to confuse their model numbering system. The 900cc cars were type 311, and shared a few components with the old IFA F9 (part numbers begining 309 pre-date the 311, part numbers beginning 311 were new). There were quite a few changes made to the 311 during it's 1956 to 1962 production run, but these were mostly minor. In 1962 a new 992 cc model was launched, and here is where the model confusion begins. In some markets (eg Poland and Czechoslovakia) it was sold as the 312, but in Germany it continued to be sold as the 311, but part numbers for the new components all began with 312. Both cars featured a chassis with transverse leaf spring suspension. In 1965 a third car was produced using the same basic bodyshell, but again was an almost totally different car featuring a chassis with coil spring suspension. This car was then referred to as the type 312.

To add to the confusion there were several incarnations of the 353 to follow, and with wonderful backwards compatibility, lots of 353 parts can find their way into 311s and 312s.

I've been lucky enough to have previously owned a 100% original 900cc 311, and I still have a very original 992cc 311(312 really, as it came from Poland) which I've owned, and enjoyed, for 14 years.

Peter
