This is something that often happens with cars that are left standing. Surface
rust forms on the inside of the drum, and the sound you heard was the rust
particles being removed from the drum when you applied the brakes.

The cast iron used for some brake drums (and discs) rusts very quickly, so some
cars can make a noise from the brakes after they've been left parked in the
rain overnight!

As long as the sound goes after the first few applications of the brakes, then
it is nothing to worry about.

Subject: [USSR-Cars] ghost in the Samara

So I Finally got to drive my Samara which I've owned for a couple of months now
but never did get to even test drive it because my right foot was in a cast,
and first thing I notice when driving it is that lovely metal on metal sound
coming from the right rear when you apply the brakes, so in preparing for the
inevitable I ordered a new set of drums from Latvia because of the cheap
shipping and a set of shoes from the UK because I found a set for a whole Four
Pounds! and today I was bored so thought I might as well take it all apart,
unlike with my 2105 I was able to get these drums off without damaging them in
the process, and to my shock and amazement, the drums are fine!! and so are the
shoes! I mean yeah the linings are low but nowhere near being metal on metal,
so now I'm baffled as to why there was a metal on metal sound from the right
rear and Only when you applied the brakes! I swear there's some russian Ghost
in my car
