If you have the time, just try all 3 of them, and see what you think. If you're worried about documentation for NetBSD and OpenBSD, much of the documentation for one will be applicable for the other (except for their firewalls, for example). The main things that you'll notice right off the bat if you're a linux user is the way disk partitioning works, naming conventions for nic's (eg. a Realtek 4567 would be something like rl0, while a DEC 4567 would be de0 , instead of eth0, eth1 in linux), kernel is normally under /bsd, packages and ports, and a few other things. All 3 have a linux binary emulation layer. It seems that NetBSD will be the fastest of the 3 on that little 70mhz , 24meg laptop, "but you don't have to take my word for it..." as Levar Burton used to say. It would be interesting to hear from you how they all compare on that old machine, if you do try all three.
