        Yep, I'm using an AMD.  I would be more than happy to accept your
working kernel.  That's very kind of you.

I checked /dev/dsp and it's there all right:
crw-------    1 iacov    root      14,   3 Aug 30 17:31 /dev/dsp

Looks like you're right about it not having execute permission.  I had
no idea that mattered.  I'll try to disable the malfunctioning alsa
things I've got going and see if it will work with excute permission,
and then I'll try you're OSS kernel.  Thanks.
