Hmm, I'm pretty sure that the dia win32 installer messes with the variable I mentioned. I really would try unsetting the %HOME% variable. I could be wrong of course, but the fact that you installed dia leads me to think I might be right.

Another way to test my theory would be to manually set the %HOME% variable at a command prompt to a directory that has a .emacs file in it.

Again, I really could be wrong, but I think it's worth testing.

Of course the best solution is to use Linux. You can still get WordPerfect 8 for Linux for free. I had my wife using WordPerfect on Linux for around 6 months. The only thing I had to teach her was to unmount the floppy before ejecting it. She didn't seem to mind, "I don't see what the problem is, it all looks the same to me." That was a while back on Caldera OpenLinux eDesktop. That was a great system. Quietest box i've ever owned too. <sigh/>

I guess you probably can't play Generals on Linux though. That's why my brother calls his Windows box his "Wintendo."

I've recently installed dia, dia2code, C&C Generals, mozilla, WordPerfect office 2000, and probably a couple of other things.
However, I've deleted the .emacs file in the emacs/bin directory, and when I save the options it writes a new one there, but it still doesn't seem to read/load it.

Just a thought, but what else have you installed recently? The reason I ask is that I think emacs tries to store .emacs in your $HOME (%HOME%) directory, which some other program may have recently set for you.

I have been using emacs under windows for many months and things have been fine up until a couple of weeks ago. It stopped reading the .emacs file. If I delete it it will write a new one when I set the options I want, but it won't remember them when I restart emacs. Also, if I don't delete the .emacs when I try to save the options it says 'Saving settings from "emacs -q" would overwrite existing customizations'. Does anyone know why it won't load the .emacs file anymore?
Thanks.
