First, I think you meant "instead of 8.1". The current version is 8.0. Mostly I think they chose 9.0 because of the company name change: BluePants. Seriously though, I don't know why they would go to 9.0. I doubt it has to do with marketing hype. RedHat is not known for pumping up the numbers just to impress the non-techies. Remember last semester when the CEO talked about how they were close to quarter-end and wanted to release 7.1, but there was a known kernel bug. One of the head kernel hackers began to cry. They decided to hold off on the release until the bug was fixed. That was an impressive story. I believe that RedHat has stuck with that principle. So, whatever the reason for the 9.0 jump, I believe that it is indeed warranted. Perhaps they are going to amaze us yet again with new accomplishments in usability. After all, it has been about 8 months since 8.0 came out.
