Support for NTFS partitions MUST be compiled into the kernel or built as a module of the current running kernel and inserted to work. No way around this except rebooting into ?indows. The kernel NTFS is usually 2 part, read-only support/module and separate read-write support/module. I don't recall seeing two options in 2.4.20 though, so maybe it's just the one now.. But it simple will not work if the kernel does not support it.
