Dear UUG, Due to some small error in initial installation, my system requires a boot disk to properly load all modules. Most noticeably, the sound card would not work. Therefore, BIOS has been set up to boot from the floppy drive. Following the installation of a Micro Advantage [cheap] CDRW ide internal drive, the light on the floppy drive goes on for a short while, but then the boot process continues as if there were no floppy. Now I have access only to the cdrom drive. Modem access gives error: modem is busy. The floppy link has simply disappeared from the mnt directory (probably due to late night user error).
I think many of these problems would be solved by reinstalling the old version of Redhat or even installing the newer one. That leaves the real problem, which is I have files on this computer that I do not want to lose but the files seem stuck on my computer. At this point, all I want is to get these files backed up onto some cd's. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. -- I have been looking into programs like xcdroast. xcdroast does not recognize my cdrw drive (which is set as a secondary master.) I would have to change configuration files to set up SCSI emulation, but I'm not sure which and how. -- I'm also wondering about the possibility of using an external usb zip drive (which I should have gone after in the first place). However, I don't know at what point the system does its "plugnplay" and I think kudzu is one of the services which FAILS during loading. -- Finally, would it be possible to mount my hard drive to another linux system and access the files to burn them to cd?
