I'm running RedHat 7.3. It is acting as a Samba File Server, and
hosting several web applications using Apache, Resin, MySQL etc.

I set this box up in the first week of February and it went without a
hitch. It's been very stable, actually getting great performance as
well. I'm also running 3 vnc desktops for myself and others. Anyway,
about 2 weeks ago, we discovered that the X server for the physical
console is not working. It acts like it is sleeping, and when you move
the mouse, it clicks the monitor on, but only displays black.
Everything else is working great. The vnc sessions are unaffected,
which is what I use mostly anyway to access the server.

I moved the system to runtime level 3, then back to 5, to restart X.
The screen remained black, but after I left it for 5 minutes or so, it
came up with the login screen and it was working fine again. 3 days
later though, it returned to displaying nothing.

I found a log file /var/log/XFree86.0.log that I assume belongs to X,
but it didn't indicate any errors.

Any ideas?

Regards,
Devlin Daley
