I'm grew up on the metric system and it's great, except for the fact that our paper (building supplies, etc) is cut to imperial measurements over here. OO defaults to A4 paper too, which is just not available generally over here. So we can convert to metric if we want, but that won't make much sense until metric paper sizes are available. (Not sure what I'd prefer, a metric-ized letter paper size or a4-size)
Completely apart from the fact that many people *won't* switch to a different system of measurement, if "interoperability" is any kind of goal, then OO needs to be able to detect the system locale (in Windows, or its equivalent if any in Linux) and choose its default
