There are programs that search for file headers and then start dumping bits until they reach the file footer. This works great for things like Word or Quicken files, and images. Formatting a partition doesn't overwrite every block with zero's, it just initializes the blocks it needs to keep track of files.

How could someone access the information if you just reformat the hard

NTFS?

One of the things that Eraser will do for you is create a DBAN (Darik's Boot And Nuke) boot disk. Of course, you can also download a floppy image or an iso from dban.sourceforge.net, as someone else already pointed out.

There are several ways to wipe a hard drive (you might, for instance,
boot Knoppix and run "shred /dev/hda" -- I've used that one before and
it works fairly well). DBAN is probably the easiest method around, and
it's secure enough for anyone who doesn't need to grind the platters
into dust or melt them down :)

I'm trying to sell my laptop, and would like to scrub the Hard Drive clean; so my personal files, financial data, etc. are not recoverable to the new owner. Is there a good utility to use to scrub a hard drive clean, so the data is not recoverable? Would Eraser work? I'm trying to figure out a utility that is running on an OS could delete that OS. Ummmh?

Anyway, any pointers?

thanks,

john
