I'm running a machine that has 4GB of RAM, but only 1GB is showing up
when I cat /proc/meminfo . I'm not sure if I need to compile that
support in the kernel, or if I can just modprobe it or what. I'm
running Debian/stable on the machine, and I need the space for large
simulations.

Also, when I ran java on this machine before (when I had the Linux
recognizing the 4GB memory capacity) it would only allow me to allocate
~1.9GB for the jvm (I specified that as the starting and as the max from
the command line). Is there anything special I need to do to get java
to allocate more than that?

Thanks,

Casey
