I'm not really sure why your KDE desktop would be acting that way. I just have
three suggestions, all in the Control Center (in the KDE menu under
Settings):
Set your Desktop->Behavior->Clicks on Desktop settings to bring up a menu so
that mouse clicks on the desktop are less likely to select your Trash bin.
Set your Desktop->Window Behaviour->Focus Policy settings to Click to Focus
so that your current application window will retain all events until you
click.
Set your Peripherals->Mouse->Icons settings to take a double click before
icons are activated.
