I have an IPAQ 3995. Every once in a while I install OPIE with Familiar
v.0.7 It seems to work great. Very easy to install and get running.
Just follow the install instructions, wait a few minutes and you're
done.

It has a lot of nice things with it, simple and easy to use, a LOT more
configurable than PPC.

> 2. Is the source code for the OS easy to obtain?

They have a CVS repository that you can get it from, although the code
is quite large, it is still easy to get.

Haven't had time for this yet... Sorry. It doesn't sound to hard though.

> 4. What kind of connectivity to a full-size PC can you use?

I believe that it uses KitchenSync. Other than that though they have a
nice set of step that explains how to set up networking over the serial
port, and over the USB to be able to download packages. (If fact, the
package system is a lot like apt)

> 5. Any other merits or shortcomings you've found.

Their documentation has a lot to be desired. But I am sure that it will
get better. This means that if you run into trouble there isn't much
help. But it still isn't too bad.
