Can't tell you why for sure, but OOo specifies a default printer and
it's properties per-document.  Word probably does too.  I recall some
word processor having an option for this, it might have been OOo, but I
couldn't find the check-box just now.

I've got into the habit of making my documents read-only when I'm done
with them, that way I don't accidentally change something while reading
/ printing it.
