But I just got an email from Xmission about it. You can have naked DSL

DSL from Qwest). Maybe I misunderstood you.

I didn't know that any other ISP would do the same deal (although it
makes sense, seeing as Qwest is *always* involved with DSL no matter who
your billing statement comes from. The qwest.net ISP is in my opinion a
better option than Xmission or speakeasy since it's a bare ISP (just
DHCP and DNS servers), with no restrictions, and is quite a bit cheaper
than any of the other ISPs which offer things like e-mail and personal
web space, none of which I am interested in. (Linode rocks).

Just to set the record straight, Qwest is not always involved at the DSL level. They are always involved at the physical line level though. There are companies that provide their own splitter cards in the CO (Central Office) like Covad, and hence manage the DSL part of the link themselves.

SpeakEasy uses Covad for their service. It may be possible to get naked DSL service from either Covad (and therefore Speakeasy), though I have never tried and I suspect that Qwest would make it difficult for them (hard to order any service without a phone number to associate the order with). I would ask.

Speakeasy (well, Covad really) just went through an upgrade at the CO one of my clients uses. They are now giving 768k up instead of 384k for the same price, and all customers get grandfathered in. They are calling this the "Turbo Shot" upgrade, but really, they are just upgrading out some of the CO equipment, which gives them better bitrates at certain distances.
