I do not agree that they were inflammatory. My ridiculing Chris Alvarez
in another thread was inflammatory. Nothing I have said in this thread
has been inflammatory.

It has become obvious that list policy needs to be refined. Discussion
of that policy is now taking place. Doesn't seem counter productive to
me. Most likely, you simply feel like you have been attacked. I have not
attacked you, merely your decision. You can review everything I've said
so far and that should become clear.

I know the presidency well enough to know that you meant no ill; you're
not on a power trip or persuing a personal vendetta. None the less, you
approached the problem in what I believe was almost exactly the wrong
way. As for privacy, there can be no privacy on a public forum. If a
person has done something inappropriate off list, that should be handled
off list. Banning a person from a public forum for private offenses is
just plain wrong.

Participating in a public discussion of how to resolve the problem is
the first productive step; thank you for joining the discussion.

Let's make clear, however, that simply restating "I stand behind our
decision for reasons I want to keep secret" is not productive. If the
reason is something done on the list, it's hardly secret. If it is
something done off list, it should have no bearing on list membership.

We can't clearly establish list policy if part of that policy is secret.
That is why I have pushed for a clear, published policy that involves as
little personal whim as possible.

I will think about how best to word that policy and reply when I have
finished.
