first off, this is an incredibly ambiguous statement, no? also, i doubt
roger peterson has the authority to give away the book of mormon copyright,
let alone via email.

and second, just because some schmuck posted it on wikisource doesn't mean
it's true, especially when it's as self serving as what's posted there.

and yes, it's drivel. ;-)

so as it stands, it looks like mr dibb (who is a good guy, but may be in err
here) still seems to be in violation of church copyright. :-/

i can't find any reference to that either. i wonder what version it is?
i'd have to do some more homework to figure that one out.

My bad. I thought you were referring to the copyrighted portions of the
1981 version, namely "The Introduction, chapter headings, footnotes,
Index, Topical Guide, Guide to the Scriptures, Bible Dictionary, and Maps
and Pictures". None of that is included in the scriptures.nephi.org site,
as far as I can tell.

If you're referring to the changes made in the 1981 edition that weren't
present in any other edition, I think the 'drivel' on the wikisource site
explains that pretty well:

----
The text of the Book of Mormon is in the public domain and may be
published by anyone. The Introduction, chapter headings, footnotes, Index,
Topical Guide, Guide to the Scriptures, Bible Dictionary, and Maps and
Pictures are not in the public domain. They may not be published by other
sources than The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

According to that, at least, the text of the Book of Mormon (including
changes made in the 1981 edition as well as changes to other editions)
*is* in the public domain, despite your accusations to the contrary :-)
I suppose Mr. Dibb could post such a disclaimer on his site to quell the
fears of those like yourself, but I don't see it as necessary.

As far the Gutenberg text (http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/17), I
personally can't find anywhere where it claims to be the 1830 version?
