Must ... not ... hit ... reply. Rats, I caved in.
Kudos to Erin for bringing in Locke. I wish a lot more of the whining minority
would read up a bit. In a democracy, the rights of the individual are often
disrespected in favor of the greater good.
Now, the final word (read: I'm no longer following this post): the university is
well within its right to try to control how its resources are used. At the same
time, Jason is well within his right to try to change things. Unless he's trying
to change doctrine, its not heresy. Maybe I should have read the honor code
agreement more closely before I signed it, but I didn't see anything that
obliged me to uphold _all_ BYU policies unquestioningly. As a former employee of
the university, I can say that without question that most of my decisions and
actions were _not_ inspired, in spite of the fact that I was acting on behalf of
the university. 99 percent of the time, the people that BYU employs make
decisions based on scrutiny and experience, and that is how the Lord wants it.
When the policy makers are blessed with inspiration, it is because God wants his
children to be happy, not because they are employed by BYU.
OIT (as well as all other departments) is run by righteous people who are doing
the best they can. Nonetheless, they are still humans and just as capable of
judging poorly as you are. IT IS IN NO WAY A SIN to question, even publicly,
their policies and actions. If you agree with them, good for you. Your life is
easy. If you disagree, you should try to change the system, rather than rebel
against it.
Props to OIT for doing the best they can with what they've been given. Props to
Jason for speaking his mind and pushing for what he thinks is right. Props to
all of you for reading to the end of this post.
