I work on campus where we have a public linux webserver and twice I have been
called too be told that we were getting unusually high traffic on port 80. I
was told that a virus, and then a root kit when I mentioned the word linux,
must be the culprit and that I had to fix it or my port would be shut down.
Upon the explanation that it was a web server and we use port 80 for web
traffic I didn't hear from them again until the following fall semester (where
I assume a new student took the position).

I'm not one of the sysadmins --- they could probably provide better
info than I could... These are just some rumors that I've heard from
rather reliable sources. Torrie appears to be having the same problem
from the chem dept as well... Very interesting...

Doesn't appear to be happening in the cs dept at the moment, but I do
know it has happened in the not-too-distant past (past couple weeks or
so?)
