Here's an educational interjection, as that link dives right into how
without the why.
Windows, being egotistical as it is, assumes itself to be the only OS
that would ever be on your computer. So it puts a little program in the
MBR (Master Boot Record) that simply passes control straight on to the
windows boot loader, which then loads windows.
At this point, if it was a reinstall on a dual boot system, all the
linux stuff needed to run linux is still there, it just needs a program
smart enough to choose between windows and linux in the MBR so you can
get to either one. That's where grub and the link above come in. Hope that
sheds some light on things.
