I'd recommend you try Inkscape. It has an excellent UI and to me is much
more intuitive than GIMP (though I am somewhat of a graphics guy). There's
also kpaint which is even simpler -- but offers far less power than
Inkscape.

There are other simple image programs for Linux if you look around.
