Follow-up to the Ubuntu article: http://www.linux-mag.com/cache/7607/1.html I agree with his first suggestion. I would add to it don't give your normal users sudo privileges so they won't willy nilly press the upgrade button and then come running to you when everything breaks. He also seems to have forgotten about Ubuntu 6.06 with his second suggestion. And IIRC, Ubuntu got a lot of heat of choosing to delay two months. I don't test every piece of hardware and software in every environment I can think of, but my limited experience has been the October releases of Ubuntu typically are not as good as the April releases. I usually reinstall (not upgrade) my workhorse system once a year about a month after the April release (on par with one of the first Ubuntu article's complaints). At my previous job I ran Fedora 10 and 11 on my machine and for the most part enjoyed it. There was one update in 10 that killed Skype and a few other programs, but it was fixed in less than 24 hours. And I had to beat on nVidia drivers for a day. But for the most part I enjoy Fedora. There is a small part of me that is growing that wants to switch from Ubuntu to Fedora on my laptop. I think it comes from the fact I know how to run Fedora/RHEL much better than I do Ubuntu when it comes to doing things on the command line and in VIM. And my inner Stuart says that's how I should be managing my machines to begin with.
