UW GIS Users,

As one of the ArcSupport people for the College of Ocean & Fishery Sciences, I took it upon myself to test the theory that the ArcGIS 9.2 DVD would indeed install and work on PC with a fresh copy of Microsoft Vista Business.

Well, I'm happy to report to you all that the theory was a positive experience. Your mileage may vary, but I was able to successfully install ArcGIS 9.2 (DVD) on to a PC running Microsoft Vista Business.

Here are the set of instructions that I copied/borrowed/wrote up for my department. Again, they worked for me, but no guarantees.

How-To Install ArcGIS 9.2 (DVD)

Step 1

Insert the Arc GIS Desktop 9.2 DVD in to your computer.

A big menu of ArcGIS installation options should appear.

Click on the option for “ArcGIS Desktop”

The Statup splash screen will appear. Select the “Install ArcGIS Desktop” option.

Click the Next > button at the Welcome to ArcGIS Desktop screen.

After reading the license agreement, click on the “I accept” statement and click the Next > button

Click the option for “Define the License Manager Later”. Click the Next > button.

Click the option for “ArcInfo” and click the Next > button.

Click the option for “Complete” and click the Next > button.

Click the Next > button on the Destination Folder screen.

Click the Next > button on the Python Folder screen.

Click the Next > button when you are ready to install.

Click the Finish button after ArcGIS Desktop has been successfully installed.

Exit the ArcGIS 9.2 Desktop screen.

Eject the DVD.



Step 3
Specifying the License Manager

After you have installed the software, you will need to specify which license server to use.

Set a system environment variable called

ARCGIS_LICENSE_FILE

with the value (all on one line) [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED];[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Under Windows, you set an environment variable this way:

1. Start > Settings > Control Panel > System > Advanced, click Environment Variables.

2. If you do not have administrative privelege, click New for User variables, otherwise for System variables.

3. Enter the Variable name

ARCGIS_LICENSE_FILE

and the Variable value [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED];[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Click OK.

4. You will see that the variable now shows up in the list. Click OK twice.

5. To verify that the varible is set, open a new Command Prompt (Start > Run, enter cmd), and issue the command

set ARCGIS_LICENSE_FILE

6. You will see that the environment variable is set. If this is not the case, try again or get help from your system administrator.

7. Click on the Start Menu and select All Programs, ArcGIS, Desktop Administrator. Left click on the Desktop Administrator to open the program.

8. Click on the License Manager folder.

9. Click on the Change button.

10. Change the license manager to: sde.gis.washington.edu and click OK.

11. Click the Apply button than the OK button.

Windows XP Service Pack 2 Fix (works for Vista Business)
(VERY IMPORTANT)

1. On all computers running Windows XP Service Pack 2, click Start > Control Panel > Windows Firewall.
2.  Click the Exceptions tab.
3.  Click Add Port…
4. In the Name field, enter ‘lmgrd’. In the Port Number field, enter 27004. Protocol should be set to TCP. Click OK. 5. Click Add Port…again in the Exceptions dialog box and follow the same procedure used in the previous step, entering ‘ArcGIS’ (for version 9.x) or ‘ESRI’ (for version 8.x) in the Name Field and 27104 as the Port Number.
6.  Click OK to close and enable the Internet Connection Firewall.

RESTART YOUR PC NOW._______________________________________________
