The Nansen Center is a non-profit research institute affiliated with the University of Bergen (UoB) and the PhD position is offered through the Geophysical Institute at UoB. Applicants must hold a Master's degree or equivalent in numerical geophysical modeling, dynamic meteorology, physical oceanography, climatology or related fields, or have submitted a Master's thesis for assessment by the application deadline. Applications are invited from candidates with experience and interest in climate research, in particular linked to the natural variability and climate change at the high northern latitudes. Specifically, the PhD project will run and analyze output data from the Bergen Climate Model, a global atmosphere-sea ice-ocean general circulation model. Special focus will be placed on the simulated variability over the past 500 years governed by internal variations and external forcing related to volcanoes, solar irradiance, greenhouse gases, and aerosols. The work will be performed in the Norwegian Research Council project "Arctic and sub-Arctic climate system and ecological response to the early 20th century warming" (ARCWARM), headed by Professor Ola M. Johannessen. The PhD student must take part in UoB's approved PhD program leading to the degree within a time limit of three years. Applicants must meet the formal admission requirements for the PhD program. A project plan for the PhD program will be worked out in collaboration with the discipline group.
