well here is my 2 cents

Wes Skiles used to paint light while taking shots at Florida in early 80´ 
90´cant remember, what he did was that he placed camera in tripod and opened 
the shutter and then took a flash and moved at the angle of the frame 
keeping it flashing, some info of this can be found in Burgess Cavediver 
book, but you could just ask Wes Skiles since he was filming the movie Cave

He has a company Karst Productions, look it up from web and send him a mail

For me its been enough to use Primary 300w/s and 150w/s next camera and 
400w/s at slave strobe
