A final update regarding this issue, one of the front-ends that did not have 
the patch just exhibited the crash today.

On the other hand, on a front-end that did have the patch, I have seen the 
execution pass through the new code, and the http process did not crash:

The log message was added by me to make sure the code passed through there. 
Maybe it is because I don't read the request body? However I do that a lot and 
the crash happened very rarely.

So it seems the problem was fixed.
