Had an '88 Max for two years (and never dropped it). So I guess I am familiar
with removing the gas cap. The key does work in the airbox cover. The gas cap
has the arrow pointed towards the front of the bike and the cap can be rotated
with force. The key will rotate a little bit, but not enough to dis-engage the
mechanism holding the cap onto the tank neck. My gut feeling is that a previous
owner put another gas cap on and my key will fit the lock, but not operate it.

When I get the bike up and running I'll email you offline to discuss the wheels.
Right now I'm concentrating on reviving Pandora.

Regards,
Kevin

Kevin, Do you have another Max? Are you familiar with getting off the gas
cap. I've seen on some of the maxes you need to push down pretty hard while
turning the key. Does the key work in the airbox cover lock? Someone may
have put the cap on wrong (although I don't know haw they could) it does
need to be lined up correctly. Maybe if you tried to spin the cap a little
at a time. It probably won't move though. Worse case scenario you could
drill it out with a non-sparking bit. I know they're available out there
somewhere. Of course you need to remove the tank and do a complete tank
flush to clean out all of the metal flakes.

On another note. If you're interested I'm selling the wheels from my 88. I
know the 85 wjeels were kind of boring and buying aftermarket wheels costs a
fortune, trust me I know. I was hoping to get $500 for the pair.

Good luck with Pandora's Max and let me know if you're interested in the
wheels.
