Dennis,
I have a '93 and when I get really motivated I am going to actually
install the Race Tech, (.9s), springs and the emulators that are now
hiding in my garage somewhere, (I hope they aren't too stiff because
they will never exchange them now .. sigh) .... HOWEVER ...... in the
meantime and being lazy ... I was complaining about the same thing,
(diving on braking and floating at high speed), soooooo ... I checked
sag and found it excessive, (rider sag ... 2 1/4 inches with me
sitting on it ... and 1 1/2 inches static ... by itself ... ). I
hadn't checked air in the forks for about four years so I did and they
had 2 lbs in them ... I figured with 5.5 inches of travel I should set
this at about 1 7/8 inches, (rider preload/sag ... me sitting on the
bike), 1/3 of the travel of the suspension. I ended up putting 8 lbs
of air in the forks and the sag/preload came right into spec, (1 1/4
static and 1 7/8 rider) ...... I first found this to be a little hard,
(hey !! I was floating before so it was a shock !!), but appreciate
the firmer behavior now ... I also think, (as suggested when I
complained before), that something like 15w oil might just do it, (for
rebound damping), about as good as it is going to get with the stock
arrangement. I think the manual says you can put up to 14 lbs in the
forks, (if you need that much there is another problem). After doing
this I put a plastic tie rap around the top of the fork to see how far
it would get pushed up, (to measure maximum suspension compression),
and found that I was not getting much more than 3 1/2 inches of travel
being used ... I was shocked, (hey !! another pun), to see this
because I just didn't think the stock springs were really that firm,
(I weigh 170 lbs). Anyhow I am sure things will be even better with
the Race Techs and the emulators but for not doing "anything" this is
a great improvement over the way it was. Paul has a "fork" "how to"
video tape ... check the "list" web site.
