Howie,
I had the same problem with mine just last year... the only difference was
they were the factory originals on my '85 Max! (15 yrs - not bad!)

Those small rubber gaskets (or grommets as my dealer calls them) should ALL
be replaced once SOME start leaking... They're just rubber, and will shrink,
crack, and ALL of them will leak after a while.... I did my first valve
adjustment several years ago without replacing them, but they weren't really
leaking then. Replace BOTH larger ones too. The total price killed me when
I ordered them! I only expected the valve job to cost me a couple of
dollars until I hit the gasket sinkhole. No leaks or seepage anymore is
worth is, I suppose.

On that same note, the rubber shift lever cover and foot pads are all coming
apart on my bike now... I've replaced the ones on my '82 Maxim several
times, but the 'new' ones never seem to last as long as the original ones
did... I wonder if the 'new' ones are 15yrs old (or more)!

As for your wires, did the people who mentioned replacing them say why? If
yours are OK (measure the resistance with a DMM), why waste the time and
money? My bike is still running the 85 originals just fine...

Good Luck,

Thanks for leading me in the right direction. I'm gonna adjust my
floats
first. On another subject, I noticed that my head cover is leaking
oil
through the main gasket and through two of the round seals on top.
Looking
at prices of these gaskets, it goes 16 x $3.50 (round) and 2 x $20
(big
ones). Should I go ahead and replace all 18 gaskets and seals while
I'm
there? Also, a couple people mentioned replacing the ignition
wires. They
would cost me $13/wire. Is there another route or should I stick
with
        factory wires from Yamaha?

        Thanks for any help,
        Howie
