Charles,
You have a new bike a '99 ... so it only has one pickup coil
monitoring the crankshaft, (w/ two magnetic bumps on the flywheel ...
a long one to identify cylinder 1/3 and a short one ... 70 degrees
behind to identify cylinder 2/4) ... this is a waste spark system,
(has to be since the only pickup is on the crank), and the coils fire
cylinder every revolution of the engine, (like a 2 cycle). So yes ...
it is like the R6. Since their email indicates they would be in
trouble with multiple pickup coils they are apparently enforcing their
rev limit by shorting the pickup coil ... and this is a great way to
do it ... At one time I had a kill switch on my bike ... which had
normally open contacts .... and I wired it across the pickup leads ...
(works fine and last a long time ;>) ....

Subject: VTAC rev counter/limiter
Hello again,
A few days ago I mentioned about a company that sells a rev. limiter
with a led light attachment to let you know if you are near the limit
and I just got their reply.
Before I go any further I need to know the following from the type of
ignition set-up we have. Pls. read their answer and who ever knows,
please give me an answer:
.............................."can you confirm to me how the
triggering pickup
for the ignition is made, ie is the triggercoil on the crankshaft or
camshaft on the bike, and how many trigger coils are there? if there
is one
coil similar to the yamaha R6 then ok, but if 2 coils then there will
be a
problem."

"Hi charles:
re your enquiries on VTAC:
for the Yamaha Vmax bike, the standard VTAC unit part Number
980512p1/C
would fulfil your requirements, I'm not sure on the vmax what the
ignition
arrangement is for the bike, can you confirm to me how the triggering
pickup
for the ignition is made, i.e. is the triggercoil on the crankshaft or
camshaft on the bike, and how many trigger coils are there? if there
is one
coil similar to the yamaha R6 then ok, but if 2 coils then there will
be a
problem.
The unit will connect to the bike using 4 wires and would perform RPM
limiting and give an LED display (red / green) of RPM for peak RPM and
3000rpm below peak.
the cordless option we have not released yet due to it not being fully
developed, but for RPM limiting and LED indication the wireline
version is
what we would specify.
PRICE: would be 142 Euros + 15 Euros shipping costs.
DELIVERY TIME FROM ORDER: 5 DAYS at the moment due to offroad sales.
Please goto www.smart-com.co.uk and goto the price and ordering page,
there
you will find an order form to printout and you can fax it to us at
